J. Alexander Hamilton
Alex Hamilton is the Director of the School of Policy & International Affairs and Undergraduate International Affairs Studies. He is a retired Foreign Service Officer with 28 years of experience in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Washington DC. His last assignment was directing the State Department’s Office of Intellectual Property Enforcement, where he also helped negotiate two UN treaties.
His last overseas assignment was as a Foreign Policy Advisor at the U.S. European Command Headquarters in Stuttgart, where he counseled military officers on diplomatic issues.
From 2017-2020, Mr. Hamilton served as the Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d’affaires (acting Ambassador) at the U.S. Embassy in Djibouti. He has also worked in Vilnius Lithuania, Beijing and Shenyang, China; Taipei, Taiwan; Vladivostok, Russia, and Tashkent, Uzbekistan, as well as numerous assignments in Washington DC. Alex holds a BS in Foreign Service from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington DC and a masters degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He speaks French, German, and Russian, and has studied Lithuanian, Chinese, and Spanish.
